More photos from that great big day out, the Chinchilla rodeo, 2026.
My first time at a rodeo, my first time photographing a rodeo. Done stoopid stuff like hanging too far back behind the fence, but still really impressed with the results a smoked-ham fisted amateur like myself can get with a Canon R10 and a Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens. Most of the photos here were taken at the ‘short’ end of that lens’s range, at around 100mm and at shutter speeds of between 1/1600 and 1/1000s.

That RF100-400 isn’t that great in lower light (great lens otherwise), so I switched to a little TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 manual lens – a beautiful little lens which seems to capture colours very vividly – when it began to get dark. The disadvantage this lens has though, is that it can be a little difficult to focus accurately, especially when used wide open, and very especially at night. It *is* an absolute joy to use though.
