Big Day Out at Chinchilla Rodeo

Melon capital of Australia, and home to the ‘Big Melon’, Chinchilla is a Usually quiet rural town on Queensland’s Western Downs. It springs to raucous life during the annual rodeo.

It is a BIG BIG day in the little country town of Chinchilla, Qld, when the rodeo rolls into town. Big hats blossom upon a thousand heads, and everyone heads to the annual carnival of horse skills, horse smells, and spirally bits of fried potato on a stick. Families gather to watch the spectacle, listen to the country music being blasted over the speakers and cheer their friends and neighbours in the arena, as those hardy folks wrestle with both viciously uncooperative livestock and their own jagged nerves.

There is bull-riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling and barrel racing. There are utes with enormous UHF aerials. There are flags. There are cowboys and cowgirls. There is the Cowboy’s Prayer. There is the National Anthem. There is the crowd that takes off their big hats and stands silent in respect.

There are showground rides and stalls, smoked meats and candy-floss, hot dogs and hot chips. Country kids in straw hats wander through the crowds and wonder at the technicolor vibrancy of it all, the superabundance of stimulation, the drooling reds and purples of the spinning, screaming fairground wheels.

There is the seventy-two year old cowboy who has his day, his big, big day at the Chinchilla rodeo. Out he goes on his horse into the arena, and shows the young ‘uns how he used to to it, how he still can do it.

This is the Chinchilla rodeo, 2026. It is a big day out for everybody.
