Besides Kronosaurus Korner, Richmond also has a large man-made lake, Lake Fred Tritton, as an added attraction. The lake is stocked with many types of fish, including the mighty ‘Barra. The Barra in the lake are probably an added draw to Richmond for the nomads, but they’ll be lucky to get them on the chew in the cooler temperatures favoured by senior travellers. However, the lake is also a magnet for wildlife, with many species of bird, drawn to the water (and the fish).

The shallows provide a feeding ground for waders such as the delicate White-headed Stilt, which I managed to catch on video, one crisp early morning. Dainty Black-fronted Dotterels are also present, flitting along the shore. In the water, I spotted Pelicans, various species of Comorant, Great Egrets, and various species of Herons, while Whistling Kites whistled overhead. In the bush beneath the main dam, Wood Swallows and Rainbow Bee Eaters, darted and flashed among the clearings.
