This gentleman and his companion Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), are the toast of bush campers at Apex Park, Longreach, Qld. The cockatoo was rescued as a fledgling, having been dropped or abandoned by its mother, and hand-reared. The Cockatoo, who is called Lori, demonstrates great affection towards his human companion, and it really is a heart-warming treat to watch the two interact together. Lori is regularly taken to kindergardens and aged-care facilities, where he apparently loves to show off his amazingly beautiful plumage.
Apex ‘park’ is piece of bushland just outside the outback town of Longreach, Queensland. The City Fathers (and Mothers), in their wisdom, have decided to make Longreach an ‘RV friendly’ town and have set this patch of land on the banks of the Thomson river aside as a bush camp, which is clever, as the land is prone to flooding and would be little use for any commercial activity.
It’s a top spot – no bells and whistles – and you’ll have to move out quick if it rains, but there’s plenty of room to spread out.
