Found these empty shells along the river bank – river is the River Jordan, just outside the little town of Jericho, in QLD, at Redbank camping Park. Suspect these shells were left by local Rakali – marsupial water rats or ‘otters’.
Local park rangers told me they had seen a ‘water rat’ (“huge!”) further upstream. These freshwater mussels seem pretty common throughout the outback river systems – and were once a source of food for indigenous people.
