One of the finest bush camping spots in the whole of the outback, Alroy Station is a top spot to sit back, catch a Yabby or a Yellowbelly in the beautiful local creek and just enjoy a spot of peace and quiet. There are thermal hot spring baths which you can lie back and relax in, but you won’t pay the fancy prices that you might in some of the more touristy locations in the area.

Alroy Station is perfect for a bit of slow camping. If you’re reasonably self-sufficient it’s a great place to kick back for an extended stay. There are no ‘power sites’ but there are excellent facilities available, including spotless flushing toilets, hot showers and a fine camp kitchen. Best of all, there is plenty of space to stretch out for even the biggest of rigs. There are no marked sites – this is very far from a caravan park with its rules and restrictions; just pick a cool spot (literally) by the creek, or up by the facilities and hang loose. Pets are welcome (that’s ‘well-behaved’ pets of course – and we could have a long debate on what that term constitutes) and it’ll be a real treat for them in the bush, as the station owners have put in a lot of effort making the camping area prickle-free; and if you know the outback, you’ll know what a difference that can make to both you and your pet and your general sense of well-being.

This general sense of well-being inspired by slow camping at Alroy Station is greatly enhanced by the thermal baths available to campers. These are rustic but really comfortable and perfect for settling in for an early morning soak in the delicious hot waters provided naturally by the Great Artesian Basin. Just the job for those bad backs and sore bones gained from hundreds of kms rattling about on outback roads. So, instead of rushing on to that next campsite, why not stay for a while and sit back for some slow camping?

You just might catch a Yellowbelly at Alroy Station,

You can fish in an unspoiled creek, enjoy the incredible bird life of the area, travel to the little Opal mining hamlet of Yowah which is only 25kms away and which has fuel and provisions (and Opals, of course) or just enjoy the splendid isolation of the outback. Camp fires are allowed, and the night sky at Alroy is simply awe-inspiring. Turn your motor off, settle yourself down, and enjoy some peace at Alroy Station.
